I’ve been waiting to hear more and more about Sam Raimi’s newest project Oz: The Great and Powerful, with hopes that any day now Robert Downey Jr. will officially sign on. His genius method of perfecting such loveably eccentric and intelligent characters continues to win the hearts of audiences everywhere. This would especially apply in the magical land of Oz, where the mighty and wondrous wizard thrived until he floated away in a balloon right before Dorothy tapped her heels together to return back to Kansas.
Recently, interesting plot details have surfaced regarding Raimi’s 2013 prequel to L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. Pajiba.com and MTV.com revealed that the film opens with the yet-to-be anointed wizard running for his life, after an angry husband discovers that the wizard had been sleeping with his wife. He finally escapes via hot air balloon, only to land in a strange place called Oz. He is a “fast-talking huckster who wears a velveteen frock,” also described as “something of a con man,“ and “a snake oil salesman posing as a magician.”
Eventually he falls in love with Glinda, the Good Witch. They join forces to thwart the wicked witches of the east and west, including sisters Theodora and Evanora. However, only Evanora turns evil as a result of the wizard’s rejection of her sexual advances. Theodora is of course seductively clad in black and thigh-high boots, just to add to the fun. This is all evidence that perhaps more than a PG-13 rating would be warranted for the film, or just random ideas compiled to hide the truth behind the film backed by the very wholesome Disney.
Pajiba also suggests that Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Titanic) would be a fine candidate to play Glinda, however there are still no official casting credentials at this point. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Downey Jr. fight off a threesome of attractive witches amid a crowd of monsters, monkeys, and munchkins?
