There are few sequels I’ve looked forward to as much as I look forward to Anchorman 2. It’s one of those movies that I have such high expectations for that I’m actually worried it won’t live up to my own personal hype. But the original’s main cast — Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and David Koechner — have never been funnier on their own as they were together as the Channel 4 Action News team, so I have no doubt that the collective cast will do whatever it takes to push each others’ game to the next level.
The sequel, titled Anchorman: The Legend Continues, begins shooting in March with co-writer Adam McKay back in the director’s chair, and now Paramount has announced that it will be released on December 20, 2013. December’s not typically a hot month for comedy, but Anchorman 2 will be released against the older-skewing comedy Last Vegas (starring Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Mary Steenburgen, and Kevin Kline) and Disney’s “the making of Mary Poppins” film Saving Mr. Banks. That’s some good counter-programming, though Christmas sees the release of the Ben Stiller fantasy comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. So if the Spanish News Team makes an appearance in Anchorman: The Legend Continues, we could be getting a double-dose of Ben Stiller in December 2013. What is this, 2004?
