How this one slipped passed me, I’ll never know! Ocean’s Eleven star Andy Garcia’s latest directorial project is Hemingway and Fuentes, for which he has also co-written the screenplay & will star as the secondary titular Fuentes. Taking on the portrayal of Ernest Hemingway is Oscar winner, Anthony Hopkins (The Rite).
Courtesy of Coming Soon, we’ve learned that the script is also written by Hilary Hemingway, niece of the Nobel Prize winner for Literature. The movie follows Garcia is “playing the real life fishing-boat captain Gregorio Fuentes, who befriended Papa Hemingway in the last decade of the alpha-male writer’s life. Fuentes was said to be the model for one of Hemingway’s most enduring literary creations: the grizzled fisherman Santiago in ‘The Old Man and the Sea,’ which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1952.”
Also starring in the film is Annette Bening, who plays Mary Welsh, the writer’s forth wife, who found the famed American writer dead after committing suicide in Ketcham, Idaho.
There are no other details at the moment surrounding this project, but it is very exciting to see big-screen more attention brought to classic American literature, and one of its most profound writers of the 20th century. For those of you who don’t know, Hemingway has written such praised novels as A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, all which appear on any and every must-read-before-you-die list.
