One of the most talked about director’s in the last year is David Fincher for The Social Network, but his latest project is rumored to be a remake of Cleopatra. The movie is based on Stacy Schiff’s best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Cleopatra: A Life, according to Screen Rant. What’s more interesting about the resurfacing buzz behind the film is Angelina Jolie portraying the “titular Egyptian Queen.”
While Fincher recently wrapped on the American big screen adaptation of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, he may be reuniting with Scott Rudin for Cleopatra, producer of both aforementioned movies. IMDB offers up this storyline: “Cleopatra was a firm ruler and military tactician who embarked on a ruthless rise to power. Cleopatra twice married brothers, killing each of them as well as a sister. Romantic alliances with the much-older Roman honchos Julius Caesar and Marc Antony helped her solidify power, but her dalliance with Antony undid both of them.”
Celebrity Café specifies that “this upcoming film will focus on Cleopatra’s business and political dealings, rather than her sexuality as in the 1963 film with Elizabeth Taylor portraying the queen.”
The project was recently attached to Avatar’s James Cameron, he dropped out to pursue sequels to the 2009 hit. Deadline reports, “It’s not surprising that the top directors in town are after this gig. As Rudin has described it, this is the first telling of the Cleopatra story from a woman’s perspective.”
People has confirmed Jolie in the part, and speculates which leading man should play the famous role of Marc Antony. Longtime partner and father to her children, Brad Pitt, is named on the list, as well as his Ocean’s Eleven costar George Clooney. In addition, current Bond heartthrob Daniel Craig and recent Academy Award winner Colin Firth are among the rumors. The magazine’s website also offers a pole for readers to cast a favorite vote for any of the above named actors to fill the sandals of Antony, which also includes Russell Crowe and Clive Owen.
The talk behind this film is amplified after the recent death of the legendary Taylor, who earned tremendous acclaim for her 1963 portrayal opposite longtime love Richard Burton as Antony and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar. So perhaps reigniting the chemistry between Jolie and Pitt that we all witnessed in the underwhelming Mr. & Mrs. Smith will add to the drama that existed between Cleopatra and Antony.
