Well if you going for a stern authoritarian, might as well go with someone German. I’m just saying!
It has been rumored for a while that the upcoming Man of Steel would feature a female companion to Michael Shannon’s General Zod as he pits his evil Kryptonian powers against Henry Cavill’s Superman, so it was naturally assumed by many that the character would be Ursa, who was memorably portrayed by Sarah Douglas in Superman II. There were several rumored names for the role including, for who knows what reason, Lindsay Lohan. However, Varietyreports that the character will NOT be Ursa but rather Faora — incidentally, the character who Ursa was originally based on. I guess Zack Snyder and company are just going original. It was also announced that Faora will be played by German actress Antje Traue (Pandorum). Visually she seems to be a great choice — I get a Sarah Douglas vibe from her already.
The Variety article speculates that the film’s Faora is likely “the version of Faora that debuted in Action Comics #779 as a Pokolistanian aide of General Zod. That character was an orphan metahuman with the ability to disrupt molecular bonds, which allowed her to create a mutagenic virus that served as the linchpin of Zod’s plan.” Ummm… no. It’s likely that Traue will be playing the original version of Faora, who was a Kryptonian supervillain (like Zod) and an expert in martial arts. This version of Faora recently appeared as Zod’s wife on TV’s Smallvilleseries. After all, if Zod is a Kryptonian supervillain and Faora is his henchwoman, it will make sense to make the character Kryptonian too and not from a fictional European country. My fellow MovieBuzzer Graham even reported that script leaks have indicated that she is Kryptonian, so I’m not sure who’s sleeping on the job over at Variety.
Man of Steel is set for a December 2012 release. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) is writing the screenplay based on a story developed byGoyer and Christopher Nolan, who will also produce the film. Henry Cavill will play Superman with Kevin Costner and Diane Laneas his adoptive parents, the Kents, and the lovely Amy Adams will be his Lois Lane. Michael Shannon, of course, is set to play General Zod.
