For all of you Dean Koontz fans, the wait is over! Anton Yelchin (Charlie Bartlett, Star Trek) has been cast as the title character of Koontz’s popular novel, Odd Thomas. Hit the jump for more details on this new thriller’s production!
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers is behind the camera for the film which is currently in pre-production. First Showing explains that Sommers was attracted to the story last year: “As soon as I read the book, I felt compelled to turn it into a movie. It’s a fantastic love affair between these two wonderful characters. The story combines action with heart, laughs and scares. It felt right to be doing this independently.” Producers Howard Kaplan (The Good Shepherd) and John Baldecchi (The Mexican) are also on board.
ShockTillYouDrop informs readers, “The big screen version of ‘Odd Thomas’ tells of an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift. Able to communicate with the dead, Odd must use their silent clues in an attempt to prevent a mass catastrophe which threatens everything he holds dear.”
Cinema Blend adds more details to Yelchin’s on-screen character in that he is “a young man who, thanks to his dysfunctional upbringing, can talk to dead people.” Also IndieWire reveals, “The book follows the titular Thomas, a young short-order cook… who encounters a mysterious man he suspects may be involved in an upcoming atrocity.” Also, First Showing says that he is from “a California desert town,” and that the “shadowy spirit creatures… appear only during the times of death and disaster.”
Perhaps if Odd Thomas, which was published in 2003, is a hit with audiences, producers will expand the character’s screen time by adapting Koontz’s other novels: Forever Odd, Brother Odd, Odd Hours, and In Odd We Trust. For more information on the character’s literary background, check out Koontz’s website, which even features a faux interview with the character.
Yelchin’s star has been on the rise during the last few years, especially with three upcoming films according to his IMDB, which include The Beaver, as Mel Gibson’s disillusioned son; Fright Night opposite Colin Farrell, a comedy-horror remake; he’s lent his voice to The Smurf as Clumsy Smurf. Not to mention that he’s yet to reprise his role in the long-awaited sequel to 2009s Star Trek as Pavel Chekov. He is currently also in pre-production for The Winter Queen with Milla Jovovich, and Keep Coming Back with William H. Macy and Topher Grace. In addition, Like Crazy has been all the rage at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, starring the Russian-born actor!
