Some people out there will obviously roll their eyes at the news, but anyone who is an action movie buff at heart will appreciate the latest bit of news from the post-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: Deadline reports that he is set to star in a new Terminator film. Although there is no script yet, Justin Lin (Fast Five) is attached as director. Chris Morgan (Wanted) had been named in previous reports as the potential screenwriter, but his name wasn’t circulated in the Deadline report.
The Terminator rights have been all tied up in legal wranglings since the release of Terminator Salvation in 2009. Currently, the rights holder is Pacificor, a hedge fund, who has to put a Terminator film in motion before 2018, which is when the Terminator rights will return to James Cameron, who directed the first two films. Cameron, who is currently obsessed with those blue folks on Pandora, has recently expressed that he has no interest in the Terminator franchise.
This will be Schwarzenegger‘s fourth “live” appearance as The Terminator, and fifth overall: Arnold played the title role in the 1984 original, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. His digitalized face appeared on the body of bodybuilder Roland Kickinger in Terminator Salvation in the climax of the film, which literally looked like the Schwarzenegger of the early 1980s took a time machine to 2009. It was also the best part of that otherwise not-very-good film.
How involved Schwarzenegger will be with a new Terminator film is anyone’s guess — he obviously has aged significantly, even from how he appeared in 2003’s Rise of the Machines (as seen above). Whether he’ll appear as a lead, cameo, or even digital cameo is probably up to how much the filmmakers will want to pay him.
So the question is… what are your thoughts on this news, and how involved would you like to see Schwarzenegger in a new Terminator film?
