I’ve been holding off on posting anything about this because it has been a will-he-or-won’t-he for the last few weeks (or has it been months?), but Hugh Jackman revealed in an interview with nymag.com that that Darren Aronofsky WILL be directing X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2! Find out more after the jump!
This is quite cool — film sequels normally do not get an “upgrade” in the director’s chair — and that’s no knock against Gavin Hood, director of the first Wolverine film — it’s just that Aronofsky has been behind the camera for a few modern masterpieces over the last decade including The Wrestler and the soon-to-be-released-but-already-critically-acclaimed Black Swan. Wolverine 2 will be Aronofsky’s most commercial film to date, so it’ll be interesting to see what he makes of it.
The script is by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the brilliant Usual Suspects — although, in all honesty, he hasn’t done anything as impressive since — so let’s hope Wolverine 2 changes that! The film is currently set for a 2011 release, but since it is still in the early development stages I’m unsure how concrete that date actually is.
