On April 20th, aka 4/20, Magnolia Pictures will be releasing Kevin Macdonald’s definitive Bob Marley documentary, Marley, in theaters and on VOD. To help generate some more excitement for the upcoming film, Magnolia has commissioned Swedish artist Viktor Hertz to create an alternative poster for the film. The poster is based on the original one but this time the image is created in a mosaic style using pictograms. It’s really cool and something I’d like to have hanging in my room. You can check it out below along with commentary from Hertz. I’ve also posted the synopsis and trailer for the film in case you haven’t seen it yet.
Here’s what Hertz had to say about the poster:
The idea behind the pictogram mosaic portrait, is to somehow show the complexity and all the different things that made the man behind the music. For example, I inserted 11 baby pictograms in the mosaic, depicting his 11 (official) kids, and also a football player and a gun chamber (depicting the two gun wounds he got). There is also a van (which I saw in the movie trailer, actually) hidden somewhere.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Bob Marley’s universal appeal, impact on music history and role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. MARLEY is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international super stardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.
From Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald (One Day In September, The Last King of Scotland) comes the story of a towering figure of musical history, whose music and message has transcended different cultures, languages and creeds to resonate around the world today as powerfully as when he was alive.
