Movie Buzzers has been all over reporting on the production, trailer, and now upcoming release of Baz Luhrmann’s reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which was originally awards season bait with a Christmas premiere. However, it has been reported that the highly anticipated 3D epic is getting pushed for a summer blockbuster release in 2013.
The movie, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Tobey Maguire (The Details), and Carey Mulligan (Shame) as the respective leads Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, and Daisy Fay Buchanan, will now be moved far from costume period dramas like Les Miserables and Anna Karenina, both which hit theaters in the late fall / early winter, perfect for snagging some nominations at next year’s Golden Globes and Oscars.
Apparently, Luhrmann asked for the extra six-month cushion in order for more time to work on the special three-dimension effects that will no doubt make a show out of the classic novel, much like that of the music video-inspired Moulin Rouge!
It’s a shame that all this hype surrounding the movie has been making headlines throughout 2012 and we won’t be able to indulge in the glitzy final product until next year, but perhaps this will take the pressure off for awards season. After all, Luhrmann lost out on the potential of Australia which starred Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman when it was released in 2008 against Quantum of Solace, Milk, Four Christmases, and Bolt.
What do you think of this six month delay? Will you still be interested in The Great Gatsby next summer? Are you disappointed or excited about the 3D project?
