You’ve heard me go on about my love for Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa, but my favorite martial artist of all time is Jet Li. Ever since I was little and had my birthday at a screening of Jet Li’s The One, I made it a point to see and own as many Jet Li films as my wallet would allow.
This week’s edition of Beat Down of the Week features Jet Li in one of my favorite english language film, Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog). What makes this film different from many of Jet Li’s other english speaking films is that this one has something called heart, a bit of emotion thrown into the mix, which makes it more enjoyable to watch.
In this week’s clip, Jet Li, as Danny, has learned that killing people isn’t the right thing to do, he has developed his own ideology and is simply playing cat and mouse with his opponent (they are fighting in an underground ‘fight to the death’ league). Since Danny was refusing to fight back, more people jumped in the ring and it pretty much became an assault on him. He was down and almost out for the count when his owner, Bob Hoskins, yelled to him that he would die if he didn’t fight back. You’d be surprised that if someone told you that how much energy you would gain back and how much extra motivation it would give you to kick the crap out of one, or two, or three, hell, even four people.
The video will start about two and a half minutes in. You can stop watching once it hits 6:14. Now sit back, relax, and watch Jet Li destroy some juiceheads!
