One movie that I have yet to review but was the turning point in my flim watching career was Park Chan-Wook’s violent, Korean masterpiece, Oldboy. A film that is highly praised by Tarantino on a regular basis and one of the best films to ever come out of South Korea, in my opinion at least.
In Oldboy, Oh Dae-su (Min-sik Choi) was held in isolation for 15 years for reasons that are beyond his knowledge. He spends the movie trying to piece everything together and getting revenge on the man who has done him wrong. In this week’s Beat Down of the Week, Oh Dae-su is finally out of solitary confinement and goes to town on a bunch of street thugs. What makes this beating impressive is that the fight takes place in one single shot and is also rather realistic. What would you do if you were a prisoner for 15 years, gone a little stir crazy, and just took all your anger out on a group of talentless thugs with a hammer and fists as your only weapons?
Watch the below so you don’t have to imagine what I’m talking about. After you watch this scene, go out, or go online, and watch Oldboy, I promise you won’t regret it.
Next week’s Beat down features the loving Channel 4 News Team, so brace yourself.
