Ever since the success of his first directorial effort, Ben Affleck has been aggressively carving a new name for himself as one of the better directors working in Hollywood. With The Town being a critically acclaimed and entertaining hit, Affleck decided it was time to up the ante and has done so with his latest film, Argo, based on true Iranian hostage event.
The movie follows CIA agents as they try and extract six diplomats who are currently in hiding during the outbreak of the Iranian revolution in 1979. The trailer swings between a hardcore political thriller mood to one of a lighthearted nature before returning back to its starting serious position. The footage looks fantastic with Affleck creating a great 70s aesthetic. the challenge, which the trailer clearly presents, is if he will be able to balance the various tones. All I can say for sure is that we can expect some quality acting thanks to the stars who will be working alongside him: Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Kerry Bishe, Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, and Taylor Schilling.
I know I’m really excited for Argo, but check out the trailer and synopsis for yourself and let us know if you are too.
“Based on true events, “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis–the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.”
