Director Alex Proyas‘ ambitious adaptation of John Milton’s Biblical epic poem Paradise Lost probably won’t hit theaters until late 2013, but it has already picked up its two main angels. It was previously announced that Bradley Cooper (The Hangover movies) would be Lucifer, the once-honorable angel who falls from God’s grace when he refuses to serve mankind, and Deadline reports that we can now add that Cooper will lock his devil horns with Benjamin Walker (Flags of Our Fathers, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), who will play the Archangel Michael.
The article goes into deeper detail on the project than we’ve gotten previously. First, the film will go into production in January and is expected to use a huge amount of visual effects to bring to life the battle between Heaven and Hell (the article says the movie “will make these battles resemble 300 meets Lord of the Rings — but with winged warriors” — that’s two good battle movies to aspire to!) Proyas goes on to explain that the film will feature “three major battle set pieces… One that takes place in Heaven, another in Hell, and a third in Eden,” which gives a lot to think about in terms of visual landscape. Hey, it sounds like a major difference from a lot of the high-budget crap we’re seeing lately, so I’m optimistic!
Paradise Lost will be directed by Alex Proyas (I, Robot) and features Lawrence Kasdan (writer of Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as one of the many writers of the screenplay. It is set for a late 2013 release.
