Not a lot of people are excited about the Farrelly Brothers’ upcoming Three Stooges movie. I guess people are still scratching their heads about the casting choices: Sean Hayes as Larry, Will Sasso as Curly, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe. Perhaps in an effort to drum up excitement, the Farrelly Brothers are casting, and considering, some big comedy names in the film.
First of all, let’s go with what’s confirmed: Deadline is reporting that Jane Lynch (Talladega Nights, TV’s Glee) has been cast as Mother Superior, the nun in charge of the orphanage where the young Stooges grow up. Lynch, who’s shown great talent for comedy in her career — particularly in Christopher Guest‘s films — is a great fit for the film. I imagine we’ll get at least one “Stooges as kids” scene, so hopefully that turns out okay.
Richard Jenkins (Step Brothers) has long been rumored for a role in the film, but there’s never been confirmation. Actually, he was rumored to play the nun role that Jane Lynch has just been cast in — no joke! Whether Jenkinsis actually being considered for another role instead is anyone’s guess.
But those aren’t the only names rumored. Entertianment Weekly reports then none other than Larry David(TV’s Curb Your Enthusiasm) is also being courted for an unspecified role in the film. The ultra-talented David doesn’t typically do films, so if he does the Stooges it’s because it’s a labor of love for him.
The Three Stooges will be directed by the Farrelly Brothers and is based on a script written by them in collaboration with Mike Cerrone (who co-wrote Me, Myself, & Irene with the Farrellys). It is penciled in for a 2012 release.
