Variety reveals that Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Jane and James Marsden will star in Red Machine from Indomitable Entertainment and Paul Schiff Productions, in which the three actors will fight against a killer bear, the titular Red Machine. Yes, really.
The film — to be directed by Saw V director David Hackl from a script by newcomer J.R. Reher — is about estranged brothers Jane and Marsden reuniting on a camping trip with their girlfriends, then… WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK! Of course, they turn to Billy Bob Thornton’s character, an experienced bear hunter, to save them from the beast. As goofy as this movie description sounds I think it has the potential to be great. If Thornton’s character is just like Quint in Jaws, that is, and gives an epic speech like this:
“I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I’ll find him for three, but I’ll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you’ve gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don’t want no volunteers, I don’t want no mates, there’s just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing. “
Billy Bob Thornton could definitely pull this look off.
Hackl tells Variety, “In Red Machine I want to examine the thrill of very real fear. An audience is more easily drawn in by a story that they consider plausible and relatable — something that could actually take place in the real world. Just by the premise you know something bad is going to happen.” That’s true, I’ve been camping before and have run into bears which have subsequently… looked at me sideways and lumbered away. Good thing they weren’t Red Machine.
Schiff has produced some pretty awesome movies — Green Street Hooligans, My Cousin Vinny, Rushmore — and some awful movies — Maid in Manhattan, Epic Movie, Date Movie — so I guess this could go either way.
