This piece of news temporarily surpassed my excitement for The Avengers for a mere two minutes, that’s how fantastic it is! After the premiere of Freaky Deaky at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, one of the lesser known members of the cast, Michael Jai White, spoke about his upcoming projects. He’s got a romantic comedy in the works which will be his next directorial effort and will be fighting some drug cartel’s down in Mexico to continue his action run. But who honestly cares about all that when he goes on to say that Black Dynamite 2 is on the way!
“We hope to shoot ‘Black Dynamite 2‘ at the end of the year,” he says, announcing a reprisal of the popular cult film character. The original 2009 film wasn’t a massive hit though it gained a strong grassroots following and has even led to a Cartoon Network spinoff, which Jai White continues to develop. White wouldn’t reveal any plot specifics, though the fake-blaxploitation angle could possibly undergo a revamp for the eighties, if he so chooses.
Black Dynamite was one of my favorite films senior year of college and I consider it to be my greatest contribution to my dorm that year. I must have watched the movie five times in one week, adding more people to an already crowded room each time I screened it only to see their loving reactions. Even if I don’t think a sequel is needed, I will receive the film with open arms and will prepare myself to quote it for the rest of my life. Let’s see what the 80s will bring for an ass kicking martial artist.
