Sex & the City fans everywhere will be gasping over HBO’s Film’s decision to bring Candace Bushnell’s prequel story, The Carrie Diaries, to the big screen. This will show a young Carrie Bradshaw, minus Sarah Jessica Parker, in the 80s as a high school student. Hit the jump for all the juicy details!
Who better to head the case of this flashback to Carrie’s early days than Gossip Girl star and it-girl of fashion Blake Lively? Slash Film provides lots of dirt on the production which “is still in the discussion stages.”
Michael Patrick King has hit sights set on Lively who would help draw in a younger generation of fans to the very well-established story. An insider from Grazia says, “There are no plans to bring SJP and the other girls back together in the old format. The prequel is about breathing new life into the story and exploring Carrie’s first few months in NYC and the beginning of her relationship with an older man.”
According to Bushnell’s story, Carrie doesn’t meet up with Charlotte, Samantha, or Miranda until much later in her youth, but perhaps there could be a quick passing by on the street of a teased Carrie and a neon and spandex adorned Samantha just to excite fans? In addition, Bushnell has created a follow-up story called Summer in the City, which “explores how her [Carrie] relationship with Samantha and Miranda first began.”
Since the underwhelming bomb of Sex & the City 2, “this move allows the franchise to retain its brand recognition while also introducing a new batch of hot young starlets… And since it’s based on source material by the author whose book was the basis for the series to begin with, there’s no room for anyone to complain.”
Slash Film also sheds light on these details of Carrie’s story: “Before ‘Sex & the City,’ Carrie Bradshaw was a small town girl who knew she wanted more. She’s ready for real life to start, but first she must navigate her senior year of high school. Up until now, Carrie and her friends have been inseparable. Then Sebastian Kydd comes into the picture, and a friend’s betrayal makes her question everything. With an unforgettable cast of characters, ‘The Carrie Diaries’ is the story of how a regular girl learns to think for herself, and evolves into a sharp, insightful writer. Readers will learn about her family background, how she found her writing voice, and the indelible impression her early friendships and relationships left on her. Through adventures both audacious and poignant, we’ll see what brings Carrie to her beloved New York City, where her new life begins.” If that doesn’t make for a great movie setup, then what does??
StyleIte is also all over this story, claiming that there is a “glamorous void.” needing to be filled by producers. However, the website says that Lively’s leggy blonde “Manolo Blahnik-heeled role” would just stifle her when she’s set on breaking the mold which launched her career. Movies like The Town and the upcoming The Green Lantern have been elevating her star status beyond her Upper East Side television persona Serena Van Der Woodsen. Although, MTV’s Hollywood Crush compares Lively and Parker in that, “there’s a fair amount of Carrie Bradshaw sensibility underneath those long blond tresses.”
