In a shocking turn of events, news has come out that Gary Ross has walked away from The Hunger Games franchise and will not be returning to direct the highly anticipated sequel Catching Fire.
Before The Hunger Games hit theaters, Lionsgate and Ross had supposedly been discussing his return as director for Catching Fire and that they would come to terms eventually and then get the ball rolling on the sequel. However, we have learned in the past that nothing is final and anything can happen until there is a signature on a contract and it seems like the breaking point had to do with MONEY. This is not that big of a surprise because there have been reports that Lionsgate has been lowballing the cast and crew of the films.
The Playlist has a very detailed article about the situation and what transpired between Ross and Lionsgate. They said that he has exited the franchise and actually resigned earlier this week.
They also said that Ross wasn’t terribly interested in spending the next few years in The Hunger Games world and would rather do something different.
No official word yet from Lionsgate but with filming to begin this fall with a release date of November 22,2013, you can expect them to find or already have a director in mind to bring on for Catching Fire.
So now that Ross is out of The hunger Games, what will his next project be? The Playlist was also told “it will be something he has written that (ironically) will earn him a better payday that he would’ve received on Catching Fire.” That’s a nice little slap in the face parting gift from Ross to Lionsgate to say the least.
