Director Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Yogi Bear) will direct Brendan Fraser in a version of fiction’s second most-famous bowman (after Robin Hood, of course), William Tell in William Tell: The Legend or William Tell: 3D (the title has been reported both ways).
Deadline reports the film to be a “historical family action adventure,” which sounds like something right up Fraser’s alley (and not too dissimilar to Journey to the Center of the Earth). The script is currently being worked on by original writers Chad and Evan Law (Hero Wanted, The Hit List).
Curiously, another, more serious take on the William Tell legend, Ironbow: The Legend of William Tell, went into production in 2008 and was supposed to be directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl). That project seems dead by now, though IMDB still has a listing for it (coming out in 2011, no less).
Though the William Tell legend isn’t well known for it’s visual theatrics (besides the famous apple-shooting), I’m mildly curious to see how Brevig and his production team will approach the legend in a “visual” way. The film will shoot in Romania and Switzerland, the latter of which is where the William Tell legend originates. Production is set to start in March 2012.
