The funniest ladies in Hollywood are in the new movie, Bridesmaids. I’m talking about Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live), Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), Melissa McCarthy (Molly & Mike), Elie Kemper (The Office), and Wendi McLendon-Covy (Reno 911). Then there’s also Rose Burn, known for her dramatic role in Damages, but based on this trailer, she fits in very nicely with the veteran comedic actresses of the small screen. Hit the jump for more details on this super funny chick flick that‘s a must-see for 2011!
According to IMDB, the movie is “A comedy centered on two women battling to plan their friend’s wedding party.” With the woes of planning a bridal shower, the bachelorette party, and basically being a servant to the bride (who actually doesn’t look like a bridezilla in this case) is a daunting task. Movies like Bride Wars, Made of Honor, 27 Dresses, and My Best Friend’s Wedding prove that people, mainly women, flock to wedding-oriented movies. Not just for the hilarity that may ensue while trying to make everything perfect for what‘s supposed to be the happiest day of one‘s life, but there’s that sense of escapism that occurs for the female members of the audience, reassuring them that even in the most oddball of stories, there is a happy ending.
Written by Wiig and Annie Mumolo (who has an appearance in the trailer on the airplane), Paul Feig (Nurse Jackie) directs the dominantly female cast, which also includes the two-time Oscar-nominated late Jill Clayburgh (An Unmarried Woman). Even Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock favorite Jon Hamm is in the film as a love interest for Wiig’s unlucky in love character, Annie. The movie is produced by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year Old Virgin), so it has a fifty-fifty chance of actually being a hit.
This image of the film’s female cast comes courtesy of Online Movies Hut. Aside from the very successful comedic chops of Rudolph and Wiig, my vote is on McCarthy for scene stealing. The Gilmore Girls sidekick has had a fairly successful run after the series’ end with a role alongside Christina Applegate in the short-lived Samantha Who?, and also appeared in Life As We Know It and The Backup Plan. Even Burn, who’s previous dramatic roles included Wicker Park, Knowing, and 27 Weeks Later may just become this film’s Bradley Cooper. Based on the trailer alone, take your girlfriends, take your boyfriends, take your parents. This is a movie not for the family, but for anyone with a sense of humor that likes to be surprised by what seems to be an unexpected package of ‘bridesmaids.’
Take a look at the trailer below, which needs no further introduction. The film is set for a May 13th release, jumpstarting the summer Blockbuster season. Tell us what you think? Would you see this movie?
