The first two X-Men films — both directed by Bryan Singer — almost single-handedly showed how to treat comic book superheroes seriously to make incredibly entertaining movies. But Singer passed on directing the third X-Men film to direct Superman Returns — and neither film was that good (though I’ll give the edge to Singer’s Superman Returns over Brett Ratner‘s disastrous X-Men: The Last Stand), and the next film, the first Wolverine spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was only marginally better than X-Men: The Last Stand.
But X-Men: First Class, a prequel film that ignored X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out in 2011 and proved to be both a hit at the box office and a hit with fans. Part of that had to do with Singer being involved with the prequel as co-writer of the story and producer. As Alex reported last week, First Class director Matthew Vaughn won’t be able to direct the sequel, an adaptation of the popular Days of Future Past storyline, and the hope was that Singer would step in. According to Deadline, that has now been confirmed.
But in even BIGGER news, comic news site Bleeding Cool is suggesting that because of Singer’s involvement a number of the cast of the original series will appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past alongside the returning First Class cast, which includes Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence. That would be incredible — especially if it means we’ll get to see Hugh Jackman play Wolverine for the dozenth time. Can’t make an X-Men film without him!
