I wouldn’t put Say Anything — the iconic 1980s Rom-Com that helped make John Cusack a star as Lloyd Dobler — at the top of my list of “Films That Need Sequels” (that spot is reserved for Bad Santa 2), but writer/director Cameron Crowe has once again mentioned that he’s thinking about making one in an interview with New York Magazine.
Crowe originally hinted at a Say Anything sequel this past summer, but the fact that he’s mentioning it again now means that it wasn’t just some throwaway idea. This time he admits that when he previously mentioned being open to doing a sequel or spinoff he had to contend with “many people who got upset when I said it’s the one thing I would think about doing — something more with Lloyd’s character or one of the side characters.” Crowe hints that the film might not necessary be centered on Cusack’s character, adding, “There’s a shadow of a previous story, but characters that you knew, sort of. And you go off on this tributary to another story with them. That’s how I would do a Say Anything sequel.”
But there would definitely be a part for Cusack — when the interviewer asks Crowe if Lloyd Dobler is still a kickboxer, Crowe answers, “I have ideas where Lloyd would be — but let me surprise you with it.” He ends his comments suggesting that we could ask him what Lloyd is up to a year and a half from now, which seems to say that if Crowe is going to make this movie it’ll be very soon.
Frankly after the poor performance and critical dismissal of Elizabethtown and the generally positive praise for We Bought a Zoo (but not as positive as Crowe’s previous efforts) I can see why Crowe would want to reach back for a “sure thing.” But do moviegoers care about Lloyd Dobler almost twenty-five years later?
