What better way to celebrate the day after Independence day with some Captain America news / political issues.
We knew from the beginning that some countries in the world would either object or not take too kindly of a film titled Captain America and so did Marvel and Paramount (Chris had mentioned it a few months back). It was originally believed that the film would be retitled The First Avenger for all the overseas markets, but that isn’t the case.
Marvel and Paramount international ahve decided that Captain America was too iconic to leave his name out of the title of the film so they felt it was best to leave it the way it is, besides in three countries. The film we be retitled The First Avenger in Russia, Ukraine and South Korea.
The first two are not that shocking at all but South Korea was a bit of a wild card. You would think that a country that has a strong American presence in it would leave the title the way it is. I wonder if they are going to be appalled when they see Cap dressed in his red, white and blue uniform? Are they going to digitally change that as well?
The New York Times has done a piece about the overseas marketing on the film which you can read in it’s entirety here. They said that the reason for these countries receiving the title change are,“culture and politics in addition to brand awareness… But anti-American sentiment was also a factor.”
