There’s been a lot of talk lately about Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and who will be cast in the film which portrays the plight of the American Dream, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s famous novel. No leads have been officially named, but rumors are circulating that Oscar-nominated it-girl, Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), has been added to the top of the list to play Miss Daisy Fay Buchanan. Hit the jump to find out more!
Vulture recently reported Mulligan’s connection to the film started after Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2) tested in New York this week for the part of Daisy, but then signed on to Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, which begins filming late spring of next year and will be released on December 23, 2011. Gatsby is set to begin filming next summer and it looks that as Mulligan has wrapped up the action drama Drive with Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), she is free for Luhrmann’s latest project.
Movie Buzzers recently reported that best friends Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception) and Tobey Maguire (Brothers) were rumored to portray James Gatsby and Nick Carraway respectively, but nothing official has been announced. Deadline.com revealed that Rebecca Hall (The Town) had “work-shopped” the part of Daisy, but it seems that Hall has signed on for next year’s Liars (A-E), directed by Richard Linklater (Before Sunset).
Maguire is in pre-production for Pawn Sacrifice for a 2013 release, and DiCaprio is currently tackling his role as J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s Hoover, while his lead in Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been recently announced as well.
As more comes out for this project, Movie Buzzers will be reporting on it. What are your feelings about the remake of this classic novel? Do you think Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 version starring Robert Redford could stand against what Luhrmann may have in store for audiences?
