Carey Mulligan is definitely set to play Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. According to The Wrap, the Oscar-nominated actress learned of her victory while on the red carpet for The Fashion Council Awards by the director himself, Baz Luhrmann. While no other parts have been officially named, it’s safe to assume that Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire will be joining any day now since they have been participating alongside Luhrmann during intensive workshop sessions to find the perfect female lead.
For those of you who don’t know, the F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel is centered on Jay Gatsby, and Daisy is the object of his affection, although she is a shallow character who seeks fame and fortune. With Mulligan in the role, it is safe to say that she can bring new sense of vulnerability, innocence, and charm to the character.
Perhaps it is appropriate that the petite blonde landed on the role, picking up where Mia Farrow left off
in the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Sam Waterston.
As per Deadline.com, Luhrmann released this statement: “Specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan.’”
As more details come out about this production, MovieBuzzers will keep readers posted! What do you think about Luhrmann’s choice? Would you rather see Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansson in the role?
