Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. The Final Destination. It’s a shame that horror film series have to end. Think of all the fun horror flicks we could have gotten if those series just… what? They made more films after? It was just a gimmick to make more money? Heck, the Friday the 13th series pulled this trick off twice, once in 1984 (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter) and again in 1993 (Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday). I bet you believe it too when rock bands go on “farewell tours.” So it shouldn’t be any surprise that Lionsgate is hinting that the Saw franchise is likely to return despite last year’s Saw 3D being billed as “The Final Chapter“.
According to SlashFilm, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns appeared on CNBC to discuss Lionsgate’s possible merger with Summit Entertainment. Burns outright admits that it’s likely Saw VIII will see the light of day, saying, “I’m sure, some day, you’ll see Saw back in the picture.”
Not that anyone was expecting otherwise, but of course Saw is following the same tried-and-true “take a short break” formula — after all, unlike the previously mentioned films Saw films came out once a year like clockwork, which either wore out the franchise’s welcome quicker or packed in a lot more films before people got tired of them. The films performed quite well until Saw VI, which grossed half as much as its predecessor (hence “ending” the series with Saw 3D, which performed better — especially overseas).
So look forward to Saw VIII within the next few years… then a few years later, Saw: The Final Chapter… Again. Rinse and repeat! Tobin Bell turns 70 next year, so don’t wait too long!
