“Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!”
I love you, Universal.
Last week Warner Bros., which owns the rights to make a sequel to Dumb & Dumber (titled Dumb & Dumber To) through its ownership of New Line Cinema, passed on making a sequel to the 1994 comedy classic over its $35 million budget. Even though Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, and the Farrelly Brothers were reuniting for the sequel, Warners just didn’t think the investment would pay off… despite the original making nearly $250 million at the worldwide box office and millions more in DVD sales and cable airings.
Luckily Universal isn’t as dumb. Deadline has exclusively revealed that the studio has stepped up to distribute the film domestically and new production company Red Granite (which financed The Wolf of Wall Street) will finance the film and provide foreign distribution. New Line is still involved, but there’s almost nothing that could stop Harry and Lloyd from coming back now.
As another bonus, expect this one to go into production ASAP: Daniels is gearing up to film more episodes for his HBO show Newsroom and Carrey is always busy. Could we see this in time for December 2014, which would be the 20th anniversary of the release of the first movie?
The script was written by Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine) with rewrites by the Farrelly Brothers. The plot involves Daniels’ character searching for his illegitimate daughter because he needs a kidney, though I imagine the cross-country search will go just as badly as their last.
Well, I can’t be the only person excited for this. Readers, what would you like to see in the sequel? Let us know in the comments!
