I enjoyed Thor. I loved X-Men: First Class. Green Lantern is looking better and better with each trailer. But my most anticipated comic book movie of 2011 is, without a doubt, Captain America: The First Avenger. After all, it has the potential to be a perfect cross between a superhero movie and an Indiana Jones film. Along those lines of Indy, the latest poster for the film, which was made specifically for the cast and crew, really evokes the classic Saturday matinee film serial look, and it will look incredible hanging on my wall someday next to my Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade poster.
And before anyone tries to claim the “punching Hitler” centerpiece is a rip-off of Inglourious Basterds, take a look at the cover of the very first issue of the Captain America Comics, which is the first appearance of our star-spangled hero:
To me the style also evokes the posters for the godawful 1944 Captain America serial. If you didn’t know it existed, I am sorry I informed you of its existence. It’s terrible and has VERY little to do with Captain America besides the name and costume (no Steve Rogers! No shield! No Nazis! No Bucky!).
Captain America: The First Avenger is set for a July release and is directed by Joe Johnston. It stars Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
