“Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play?”
The doll that launched a thousand nightmares, the Child’s Play franchise started way back in 1988 and ran its course through 2004’s horror-comedy Seed of Chucky. But Seed of Chucky made half of the money that the previous movie, Bride of Chucky, made, which explains why we haven’t heard much from the doll who possesses the soul of a serial killer.
But Brad Dourif –– who has voiced Chucky in all of the Child’s Play films — revealed during a horror convention that there are actually TWO Child’s Play projects currently in development, according to Moviehole. The first, Revenge of Chucky, will continue the established storyline and follow Chucky’s family. The second is a remake — “a darker and scarier retelling of the original film” — which will be written and directed by Don Mancini (who has written all the previous films and directed Seed of Chucky) and will be produced by David Kirschner, who has produced all the previous films.
We often don’t see filmmakers remake their own films, so I’m curious what Mancini and Kirschner could bring to the table. There’s a lot of potential for a scary doll slasher film. Over the last ten years remakes of classic 70s and 80s horror films (like 2003’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2005’s The Amityville Horror, 2006’s Black Christmas, 2007’s Halloween, 2009’s Friday the 13th, and 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street) have done decent business on their low budgets, so there’s no reason for them not to give it a shot.
I don’t know about you readers, but I would love to see another director to try his or her hand at a movie like this remake.
