Apparently the Chinese have a lot faith in Zhang Yimou’s upcoming historical drama, The Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale and Shigeo Kobayashi as they have decided to submit the film into the Oscar race for best foreign-language film. The film, which is set for a wide December release in China, can’t have been seen by many people and FilmNation, the sales agent, only previewed a few scenes up at TIFF a few weeks ago. This shows that the Chinese are very confident in the film they have, especially with the talented Zhang Yimou in control of the film.
The Flowers of War is an adaptation of Yan Geling’s novel, 13 Flowers of Nanjing and is about the overrunning of the Chinese capital city of Nanjing by the Japanese in 1937. In the film, Bale plays a Missionary named John Haufman who takes it upon himself to help protect a “group of schoolgirls and prostitutes from the invading army.” (via Hollywood Reporter)
In addition to this news, two new posters have hit the net for the upcoming film, the first better than the second but both are pretty crappy looking. I’m hoping these are just quick photoshop teaser posters from the studio and not something they plan on using to actually market the film.
