Well although we’re still waiting on two of the films that will eventually lead to the biggest superhero team-up of all time (Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger), the casting details for The Avengers have already been rolling. Of course, many of those roles are easily filled by the people who have already played them: reprising their roles from other Marvel films will be Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). We’ll also have some newcomers like Mark Ruffalo (who will take over as the human form of the Hulk from Ed Norton), Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and now we can add Cobie Smulders (TV’s How I Met Your Mother) in an as-yet unnamed role as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, the agency which counts Nick Fury as its head. Hit “more” for the rest of the details on the upcoming crossover film!
Little has broken about the film’s plot, but we can all imagine that much of it will be about getting “the band together” to face a common foe. Throw in some in-fighting over who gets to be leader — I imagine Downey would be perfect for that — and you have yourself a film. Of course, it does take more than that, and the script is by Zak Penn (who has previous Marvel screenplay experience with X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Elektra… the last two I’m sure aren’t his best work) and Joss Whedon, who will direct the film. Fanboy fav Whedon has written comics for Marvel before, so he certainly is familiar with the characters. The film is set for a May 4, 2012 release.
