With the exception of two disappointing films (Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers), Joel & Ethan Coen have one of the most consistently impressive records when it comes to the high quality of their films. Because of that, whenever a new Coen Brothers project is announced it’s worth noticing. Variety broke the news today about the next Coen project — a movie about the 1960s New York City folk music scene titled Inside Llewyn Davis.
Like most Coen Brothers films, the brothers have written the script together and will also direct the film together. It will be produced by Scott Rudin and Robert Graf, who both produced the Coen‘s True Grit and No Country for Old Men. The film will cover “Llewyn Davis’ struggles as a folk musician during the genre’s 1960s heyday in New York City”, which to me suggested that this will be more in the Coen’s black comedy vein until I saw that Variety referred to the project as a “drama.” I guess one could interpret that description either way… or I’m just hoping for another brilliant Coen “dramedy” like A Serious Man or Burn After Reading.
StudioCanal will finance the film and release it internationally. There’s no word on casting or release dates, but we’ll keep you posted.
