While Renee Zellweger’s second turn as Bridget Jones was not very well-received by critics but fans of the Helen Fielding-penned novels can get ready for an exciting and long-awaited third installment of the British chick lit / flick, in the form of both print and on the big screen.
It’s recently come out that Zellweger has agreed to star once again as Bridget Jones amid a Hugh–Grant–Colin–Firth-love-triangle. However, given a few rumors that have surfaced surrounding the film, we’re left wondering if the Oscar-winning actress will pack on the pound for which Bridget voluptuously dons or will this newer movie take the eager diarist on a newer, more svelte adventure?
According to Movie Web, Fielding has revealed, “I will be working on both the book and the film, but I don’t know if they are the same thing yet. It’s not been decided.” The website also adds that “the plot will center on the title character going through a mid-30s baby crisis.” This year’s Oscar-winner Firth has publicly commented on returning to his role as Mark Darcy with, “I think the idea of Mark and Daniel [played by Grant] and Bridget in advanced stages of deterioration could be quite fun. We’re making a comedy, after all.”
In Bridget Jones’s Diary, which was released in 2001, we saw Firth and Grant battle it out for Bridget’s affection, which earned Zellweger her first of three Academy Award nominations. The actress accepted the award finally for the supporting role in Cold Mountain in 2004 with some extra curves on her usually slim frame while shooting Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Cinema Blendoffers up a reference to the UK tabloid, The Sun, with a confirmation of Zellweger’s participation in the film “so long as she doesn’t’ have to put on weight as she did for the first two.” Also, it is rumored that Bridget becomes pregnant, but isn’t sure if paternity belongs to Mark or Daniel.
NDTV Movies explains that a source has said, “Renee had no reservations about saying yes once [to a third movie] once she found out she wouldn’t have to get fat. She hated having to do that in the last two films.”
We do know that Zellweger’s star status has suffered since New in Town and Case 39 and this could possibly reprise the Southern girl-next-door of Hollywood who won over audiences in Jerry Maguire and Nurse Betty. Grant has been under the radar with the exception of by-the-book romantic comedies like Music & Lyrics and Did You Hear About the Morgans? Firth, having been the man of the 2010-2011 awards season, will have no problem slipping back into character, especially after exclaiming his anticipation to see where the characters have ended up ten years later.
Details on production have not been released as of yet, but anyone who loved the first film will be excited to learn more about this upcoming project. In addition, IMDB has no other information for this movie, but I can’t wait to see more about it!
