The most important award of the night is always Best Picture, which went to The Social Network. Competition was heavy with nine other nominees, which will surely coincide with this year’s Oscar contenders. They included 127 Hours, Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Town, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone.
As for lead acting, it’s no surprise that Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) were the winners, along with supporting victories for Christian Bale (The Fighter) and Melissa Leo (The Fighter). These four talents are no doubt in contention for winning Golden Globes, as well as Oscar nominations.
A unique category for this award’s show included one for Best Acting Ensemble, and here is where the complete cast of The Fighter was award. It is likely that this cast will also prove triumphant for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The casts of The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, and The Town, were also honored in this category with nominations. Also, Hailee Seinfeld (True Grit) was named Best Young Actor / Actress, even though Chloe Moretz received duel nominations for Let Me In and Kick Ass, and Jennifer Lawrence is up for a lead acting nod at the Globes.
The rest of the night’s awards were scattered among the critic’s favorites as David Fincher won for Best Director for The Social Network, and Aaron Sorkin won for the film’s adapted screenplay, which are likely favorite for the Globes as well. The King’s Speech writer David Seidler won for Best Original Screenplay, but the film lost to Inception in the Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction categories. Inception was also honored with wins for Best Action Movie, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing.
Other winners included Toy Story 3 for Best Animated Feature, Easy A for Best Comedy Movie, Sweden’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for Best Foreign Language Film, Waiting for ‘Superman’ for Best Documentary Feature, “If I Rise” by Dido and A.R. Rahman for 127 Hours, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won for Best Composer for The Social Network. Also, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland won for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup.
