Disney more-or-less sat out of Comic-Con this year (disappointing many who expected extensive Avengers coverage now that Disney owns Marvel Comics) in favor of presenting its big announcements at D23, Disney’s own expo. Most of the major announcements that came out of it related to Pixar and its upcoming slate of films.
According to Deadline, though little new was said of Pixar’s next film, Brave, footage was shown to the audience of the 2012 film. More interestingly, Disney gave the audience the first look at the character designs of Monsters University, the upcoming prequel of Monsters, Inc. Being that the movie will cover the beginnings of the friendship between Sully and Mike, the designs show younger versions of the characters and in a cool move Pixar put them side-by-side with their older Monsters, Inc. counterparts. Check out the designs below from Bleeding Cool:
Monsters University, set for a June 21, 2013 release, will feature the return of Billy Crystal (Mike), John Goodman (Sully), and Steve Buscemi (Randall Boggs). Crystal himself showed up to promote the film, saying “Trust me, it’s hilarious, as different as anything you can imagine.”
Probably the most interesting announcements involved Pixar’s upcoming films which, true to Disney CEO Bob Iger‘s word that no Pixar sequels are currently planned after Monsters University, are both original movies. The first, set for a November 27, 2013 release, will be a “What If?” story focusing on dinosaurs — more specifically, it is “What if the asteroid that was supposed to kill the dinosaurs never hit the earth?” and is expected to show the resulting world. It will be directed by Bob Peterson, who co-directed Up, one of Pixar’s best films.
The second announcement related to Pixar’s film set for a May 30, 2014 release and is about what goes on inside the human mind, and will be directed by the other co-director of Up, Pete Docter. There was even less said about this movie being that it’s almost three years away, but just thinking of what Pixar could do with this concept is already making me smile.
