Dan Aykroyd recently appeared on Dennis Miller’s radio show and of course all the Ghostbusters 3 talk came up. While the rumored sequel has always hinged on Bill Murray‘s involvement, it appears now that Aykroyd is ready to move forward even without Murray. From the transcript posted on Coming Soon:
“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3’ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”
As for the plot, Aykroyd makes it clear that the Ghostbusters team has seen better days, stating, “My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac,” he says, “He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.” He adds that he’d liked to see Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as one of the new recruits, which will be “three guys and a young woman.”
I’m a bit tired with all of this Ghostbusters 3 talk and I’m of the opinion that it just isn’t worth it, especially if Bill Murray isn’t involved. “Passing the torch” movies never seem to turn out well as the replacements never measure up to the originals that we’ve grown to love. In fact, Deadline reported the same story and added that Sony is still insistent that Murray must be involved if they’re going to back the film. Still, I don’t even think Bill Murray could get me interested in this movie now — if it was going to happen, it should have happened a decade ago.
But what’s your view on it — any interest in Ghostbusters 3, are are you as burned out as I am?
