There’s hardly any actors out there who are as respected — or as picky about roles — than two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis. In fact, Day-Lewis has only appeared in nine films in the last twenty years, although he has been offered dozens of other roles. So when Day-Lewis does sign on to a project, it’s worth noticing. Thankfully we’ll see Day-Lewis return to the screen in 2012 (his first film since last year’s Nine) in Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln, playing the title role. Click on “more” to read some of Spielberg‘s praise for Day-Lewis.
Spielberg and Dreamworks CEO Stacey Snider nearly run out of words to describe Day-Lewis‘ greatness in the press release announcing Day-Lewis’ casting:
“Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema’s distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with Lincoln,” said Steven Spielberg. “Throughout his career, he has been exceptionally selective in his choice of material,” added Stacey Snider, “which makes us feel even more fortunate that he has chosen to join with us for Lincoln.”
Somebody get them a thesaurus! Lincoln will be based on the book Team of Rivals by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. The book was adapted by Tony Kushner, who previously worked with Spielberg on Munich. I’d like to see what Spielberg and Day-Lewis are capable of creating together, although I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s pretty funny that this film is coming out the same year as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Wait a second… anyone want to see Day-Lewis in both films? Let us know your thoughts and that (and on this casting news) below!
