Who says there aren’t perks to being an award winning filmmaker? Director Danny Boyle (Trance, Slumdog Millionaire) is just like us, he goes to the movies too but when he went to the theater to see the documentary Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers, he walked out with his next film project lined up.
Variety has reported that Boyle is now attached to direct a feature adaptation of the documentary which takes us into the world of diamond heists and the underground jewel trade. The documentary features interviews with the most successful diamond thieves in the world and uses surveillance footage to show us how professional and efficient these thieves were at stealing $30 million worth of diamonds over their careers.
Boyle is coming off his last film Trance which focused on an art heist, and I loved that movie, so this film, probably a mixture of Oceans 11, Trance and a lot more serious content, is perfect for Boyle’s style and I think he’ll end up killing it. I’ll be seeing the documentary Smash and Grab pretty soon so you can expect a review on it if you’re curious to learn more about the story before Boyle brings it to the big screen.
Fox Searchlight and Pathe will co-finance the movie and Fox Searchlight will distribute it here in the States. Check out the trailer below for the original source material.
