The 2003 Ben Affleck-starring Daredevil film is a mixed bag. It was made during the time between the first X-Men hitting it big and Marvel taking control of its properties with Iron Man. And, of course, it expected us to take Ben Affleck seriously as a superhero. But Daredevil — blind lawyer Matt Murdock by day, defender of Hell’s Kitchen by night — is one of Marvel’s more popular superheroes, and he wasn’t going to remain sitting on the shelf for long. With that said, Variety has announced that David Slade (whose name sounds like a comic book character’s) has been picked by 20th Century Fox to direct the next Daredevil film.
Slade directed 2005’s Hard Candy and 2007’s 30 Days of Night, but has probably had the most exposure with his last directorial effort, Twilight: Eclipse.
Oddly, the Variety article says that “people close to the project say it’s not a reboot per se — more a continuation of the “Daredevil” saga.” So it’s a sequel but not a sequel — I’m guessing something like The Incredible Hulk, the “non-sequel” to The Hulk, although the latter film ended in the same location where the former began (seriously, as much as Marvel Studios stressed that those films weren’t related in their promotion for the Ed Norton version, it isn’t hard to make them fit together).
Also of interest is a rights issue: Fox has to keep moving on its Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and X-Men properities or the rights to the projects revert back to Marvel Studios (and Disney, who now owns Marvel). This is the same reason why Sony is intent on churning out more Spider-Man films. That probably means we can look forward to an announcement of another Fantastic Four film soon. God help us all.
