After reporting on remakes for classic stories that we’ve all grown up with like Alice in Wonderland and even Snow White, Red Riding Hood seems to be the latest one not to miss. With a thrillingly dark poster and trailer released, there’s apparently much more going on than we as children were first led to believe could happen in such a tale-as-old-as-time legend. Hit the jump for more details!
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directs the film set in “a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family‘s displeasure,” according to IMDB. The young girl, named Valerie, is played by the wide-eyed rising star Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet), and has the likes of veteran actors such as Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight),Virginia Madsen (Sideways), and Julie Christie (Finding Neverland) along for the ride.
According to AceShowBiz.com, Seyfried had this to say about the film: “What fans can expect from this version of the story is that it’s basically just a jumping-off point. Catherine Hardwicke has just completely turned this story into something edgy and Gothic and dark, and she’s clearly somebody that’s very capable of turning something, everything into an extraordinary world, as we’ve seen before. And also there’s a romance aspect to the film, which isn’t in the fairy tale … a lot of romance and a lot of danger. Fans will be surprised by the tone of the film. Catherine just completely throws it into this dark world, and it’s a little scarier than it was meant to be when it was written.”
Joining the cast is Lukas Haas (Inception) as Father August, Billy Burke (Twilight) as Cesaire, and Shiloh Fernandez (who is rumored to be attached to the new 21 Jump Street reboot) plays Peter, Valerie’s beloved woodcutter.
Set for a March 2011 release, based on the film’s trailer, I’m reminded of haunting and provocative movies like The Village and Jennifer’s Body. This is definitely a movie to be excited about next year, especially with Seyfried (the only good thing to come out of Mamma Mia!) raising her star meter even more with every smart decision that she makes in choosing her roles.
