Never did I think that a former WWE champion would take on a significant big role in the Marvel cinematic universe. After reports of Jason Momoa reportedly passing on the role, Marvel continued screen testing a ton of other actors and finally have decided that Dave Bautista would be playing the muscle, aka Drax the Destroyer, in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film.
Bautista will be fighting alongside Chris Pratt‘s Star-Lord character as well as Gamora, the tree-man Groot and Rocket Raccoon, all three of which have yet to be cast.
For those that don’t know, THR gives a simple description of Drax’s character (and I’ve provided an image of the full team below-Drax is on the left):
Drax is a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the final-scene tease of Avengers). His powers include flight, super-strength and energy blasts.
So what do you think of the choice? I for one don’t actually think it’s too bad as Bautista can actually nail the badass role and won’t have to actually pretend too much. His experience as a WWE star and the villain in RZA’s Man with the Iron Fists should be enough to get him through this role. Plus, Marvel won’t allow him to screw it up.
Guardians of the Galaxy is is set to release on August 1, 2014
