I bring up two points every time I write about the Planet of the Apes franchise:
1) I love how the 2011 reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, succeeded both critically and at the box office despite most predicting it would fail.
2) I am so, so, glad that this franchise is back.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was an excellent starting point for a new series based on the original long-running sci-fi franchise, and as it turns out audiences won’t have to wait as long for the sequel. Fox has officially moved up Dawn of the Planet of the Apes a week to July 11, the same day as Fast & Furious 7 was scheduled for release. However, because of Paul Walker’s death it seems pretty clear that Universal has to push back that sequel to do some major retooling of the story (since there’s no way Universal is not going to continue the franchise).
In addition to that change, the promotion for Dawn is beginning, and we have the first poster for the film (check it out to the left) with an ape front-and-center. In addition, the first trailer is expected to be released over the next few days. In addition to Andy Serkis, who is returning to portray head ape Caesar via motion capture, the film will also star Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, and Kodi Smit-McPhee (as humans) and Judy Greer, Terry Notary, Karin Konoval, and Toby Kebbell (as apes). The film was directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and was written by Mark Bomback and Scott Z. Burns based on the original screenplay by Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
I interviewed Bomback earlier this year and while he couldn’t tell me much about Dawn, he spoke about it with a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm. I think I’m just as excited as he is to see it!
