Wednesday was a very busy day when it came to superhero news. Recently Marvel has been dominating the film news but today DC responded with two highly sought after comic books while Marvel also dropped a few major announcements/rumors. Since its been a while for DC, I’ll start with them first.
Ever since I can remember, there has been talks about a Wonder Woman movie in the scripting stages or a TV show was in the works and everything in between. It seems like anyone and everyone in Hollywood has tried their hand at penning a script about the Amazon Queen, however nothing has ever came of these scripts. Well today, Warner Brothers and DC announced that Michael Goldenberg (Green Lantern) is penning a brand new script for a film and DC is pretty confident with its potential.
Now I have never understood why it was so difficult for Wonder Woman to make it to the big screen but for whatever reason it has. There is no director lined up nor is there anyone in talks to play Wonder Woman herself, but if in fact Goldberg’s script is decent enough to warrant WB to green light the project, expect every female actress to be in talks for the role. The interesting thing about this story however is that it sort of ties into the next big announcement from WB and DC.
Apparently after seeing how poorly The Avengers has done since it opened a month ago, DC has decided to resurrect talks and writing for a Justice League film with Will Beall (Gangster Squad) to try and figure out a script that can bring the biggest names in the DC universe together and make sense.
This issue I see WB having is that with Marvel, they spent years with developing these character films just for The Avengers and that time and attention to detail really paid off for The Avengers. DC on the other hand is in a bit of a pickle. We know that Christian Bale has probably played Batman for the last time after Dark Knight Rises releases and also that Henry Cavill is playing Superman in Man of Steel but we don’t know where that franchise is going. With two of the biggest roles in the Justice League sort of needing a reboot or new actors for the film, how will this work?
Sure you can bring Ryan Reynolds backs Green Lantern and also try and cast someone for Wonder Woman and let her do both a Justice League film and a stand alone film, but then what about Aquaman and who would the villains be and how would you be able to fill out all the backstories for characters that have never been on the big screen in under 3 hours?
As much as I want to see a Justice League film, I just feel like DC has fallen too far behind on this one and everyone will compare it to The Avengers which wouldn’t be fair. The best thing for WB to try and do is focus on getting Wonder Woman out then maybe reboot Batman so he can fit into the JL world and also start tying other heroes into the films.
So many questions and I have a feeling there will be so little answers. Lets just hope DC and WB don’t rush either of these projects and give them the love and support they need.
