It seems to be a running joke here at Movie Buzzers that Martin Scorsese has more projects on his plate than the seventy year-old director could complete if he were given another lifetime. It actually got the acclaimed director in legal trouble when the producer behind Silence, a film Scorsese has been talking about making since 1990, sued him for delaying the film’s production to pursue other projects. Scorsese, who is busy finishing The Wolf of Wall Street, has yet to name what his next project will be though most have speculated it will be Sinatra, a biopic of the iconic crooner which is currently being rewritten by Hunger Games writer Billy Ray.
Well as far as Robert De Niro, who made eight films with Scorsese from 1973 to 1995, is concerned, he hopes Scorsese will finally decide to make The Irishman (or, as De Niro refers to it under its original and better title, I Hear You Paint Houses) with him and an all-star cast of gangster film legends as his next movie. In an interview with The Guardian to promote The Silver Linings Playbook (perhaps De Niro’s best reviewed film in a dozen years), he talks about the possible reunion:
…we’re working on something now. It’s called I Heard You Paint Houses. We’ve been trying to get it going for a couple of years and now we’re just trying to set a time. It’s about a guy called Frank Sheeran who was in the Teamsters [a US union] and claimed to have killed Jimmy Hoffa [the controversial union leader who disappeared in 1975]. It’s based on a book by Charles Brandt who was Sheeran’s lawyer. I’d play Frank Sheeran and Pacino would play Hoffa. Joe Pesci would be in it too.
There’s nothing we don’t know about the project above that we didn’t already know, but when asked by the interviewer if it will be happening soon, De Niro answers, “It has to or we all won’t be around any more.” It’s a fair point, since as busy as Scorsese is De Niro is also equally busy (and while Pacino also has a full schedule, Pesci is semi-retired from acting). I know most would love to see Scorsese and De Niro collaborate one more time for old times’ sake, so let’s keep hoping that the stars will finally align for this one!
