In the years since the 2005 release of Sin City, two actors who appeared in the original film have passed away: Brittany Murphy, who played the bar waitress Shelly, and Michael Clarke Duncan, who played the hulking bodyguard Manute. While Shelly was mostly a background character — Murphy already filmed the character’s only main part, which was from Sin City: The Big Fat Kill for the first film — Manute has a major role in the Sin City storyline that will make up most of the sequel, A Dame to Kill For. While Duncan was a perfect fit for Manute, obviously the role needed to be recast.
Now that production is underway on the long-awaited sequel, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dennis Haysbert — best known for his role as the president on 24 and for Allstate commercials — has been selected to take up where Duncan left off. In addition, Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch, The Hangover Part II) is replacing Devon Aoki as the assassin Miho.
The cast and crew, lead by co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, are shooting the film on-and-off in Austin through December and January. Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Michael Masden and Rosario Dawson are returning to their roles from the original. There are still a number of key roles that have yet to be cast, or at least announced (most notably pre-facial surgery Dwight, who was played post-surgery by Clive Owen in the first film). It’s set for an October 4, 2013 release.
