If you thought Leighton Meester’s Gossip Girl character was a little bit on the crazy side, you ain’t seen nothing’ yet. In a not-so-Upper-East-Side package, Meester’s new thriller The Roommate, which also stars her celeb-look-alike Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), opens next week.
IMDB gives us this information about the plot: “College student Sara finds her safety jeopardized after she’s assigned to a dorm room with a new roommate, Rebecca. “Kelly plays the innocent victim and Meester is the antagonist, Rebecca. Also featured in the film are Cam Gigandet (Burlesque), Alyson Michalka (Hellcats), Billy Zane (Titanic), Danneel Harris (Friends with Benefits), Frances Fisher (Titanic), and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries).
Danish director Christian E. Christiansen brings producer Sonny Mallhi’s script to life in what seems like an homage to past favorites like Fatal Attraction and Single White Female for the Gossip Girl / MTV audience. Perhaps this effort will take any spotlight away from the few critics who panned Country Strong, a film headed by Gwyneth Paltrow, but was probably geared to help launch Meester’s music career. The plot of this movie however does not present anything different, new, or exciting for audiences. If Meester was not doing press for this, then nobody would be talking about it. Although Kelly’s star status is slowly rising, due to her engagement to Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, and her upcoming murder mystery Searching for Sonny with Masi Oka (Heroes).
Emory Wheel recently conducted an interview with the film’s star who said that “the experience of seeing herself as a threatening and frightening character proved to be somewhat disconcerting.” The actress adds, “It’s sort of funny that I’m what’s scary in the movie. It was interesting for me because I have what I believe is a firm grip on reality. I’m weird and crazy like anybody else, but this [character] doesn’t have control of her mind whatsoever. So it was interesting and somewhat uncomfortable at the same time.”
The movie was filmed over a year ago, and Meester also fondly recalls her connection to her recent role in Country Strong, which allowed her to indulge in her love of music and performing. You might also remember that the multi-talented actress played a virginal pop singer on Entourage, and contributed vocals to the hit song “Good Girls Gone Bad,“ with Cobra Starship.
The website also says, “Though Meester’s schedule leaves little room for breath, she expresses excitement over getting to work across such a vast spectrum of projects. Much like her character Blair Waldorf… Meester is always on the lookout for the next exciting venture.”
If The Roommate fails to prosper at the box office, it will be one more notch on her acting belt and another DVD to rent for the thriller genre. Not to mention this will prompt some stylish red carpet appearances to promote the film until something better and perhaps more memorable comes along. Did anyone even see The Stepfather starring her GG co-star Penn Badgley or Piranha 3D with Jessica Szohr? Check out the trailer below & see for yourself.
