As we settled into our seats to watch the advanced screening of Straw Dogs, it was announced that we would also be shown an eight minute trailer for David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. This is a very unusual treat and the audience was very excited. However, the clip played about a minute without video only audio causing the audience to yell in annoyance. Finally the clip stopped and then it started up again, but this time it was also messed up. Third times a charm though and it was worth the wait.
I’ve heard nothing but praise over the book and the Swedish film (which is currently available on Netflix Instant) but had apprehensions until I heard that it was David Fincher directing. Watching the footage I was immediately sold as Christopher Plummer graced the screen. He spoke of how his young niece, Harriot, had disappeared suddenly one morning and how in every year since, he’s received a birthday present similar to the one she always gave him. He’s hires a man (Daniel Craig) to investigate and he then employs The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
The score (check here for a long clip) and the cinematography are subtle and beautiful. I try not to watch many trailers, and I was going to avoid this one, but being forced, it was very enjoyable.
