Warren Beatty was in attendance Thursday night for the opening of the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival and did a 90 minute Q&A for the fans. Beatty talked about everything, from his comparison between making a movie and vomiting to the much rumored and speculated sequel to his 1990 film Dick Tracy.
During the Q&A, Beatty expressed how attached he is to his 1990 film and how much he loved the character. Beatty had been in an ugly lawsuit since 2008 with the Tribune company over the rights to the character and has recently won sole rights to Dick Tracy, so now a sequel is legally possible at least.
The conversation about the sequel was very guarded, however, when one reporter asked about the sequel he got Beatty to say, “I’m gonna make another one.” Beatty then proceeded with the following:
I think it’s dumb to talk about movies before you make them. I just don’t do it. It gives you a perfect excuse to avoid making them. The more you talk about it, the longer it’s hidden.
He then went back and forth with a few others in the audience before he was asked if he had started anything on the film:
You’d have to define ‘start.’ I take so long to get around to making a movie that I don’t know when it starts. And I’m a very strong believer in the fact that when you’re really doing good work is when you don’t know you’re working and something just occurs to you. And you say ‘Oh, of course.’ My problem is I don’t know when I finish because I want to get it to what I think is right.
From this point forward, most of the questions then became the interest of the night with more questions about, if he would play Dick Tracy again? Who would be back from the original? Would Madonna reprise her role? Would he keep the same shooting techniques or would he venture into the digital world? etc. etc….
He did answer the question about the effects of the film, kind of, or at least how Beatty answers question:
That’s a conversation I have with [my production team] and the conversation goes on and on and on and on. I can tell you that the matte paintings [done for the original film]…they move me.
Dick Tracy was one of those films everyone figured would have a sequel and was highly talked about back in the 90’s much like everyone expected to see a Ghostbusters 3 or a Who Framed Rodger Rabbit 2, but that hasn’t happened yet. So until we see something in writing or a studio sign on for the film, we have to just figure this is Beatty talking up to the crowd and entertaining them. The only thing that makes me think he might actually be serious about the film IS the fact that he went through all the trouble of obtaining the rights to the character. Why do all that work to then do nothing with it? Will it actually be a sequel or has too much time lapsed and will it be more suited to do a remake of the film?
Personally, I think the film will end up being a remake. Beatty is a great director and an amazing actor, however, he is 74 years old. I think they might have to go the Indian Jones route if they decide to make a sequel as oppose to a remake and have Beatty pass his Yellow hat and jacket onto his son or someone else. We shall see!
