Rumors were spreading recently that Harry Potter alum Emma Watson was attached to the Kenneth Branagh-directed live action remake of Cinderella, but alas, there is no truth to the gossip. According to Deadline, Branagh is currently in the midst of holding screen tests for the lead role of the film with some vaguely familiar ingénues who would greatly benefit from their sudden leap to stardom.
The list of ladies includes Australian actresses Bella Heathcoate of Dark Shadows fame and former Pan Am star Margot Robbie, as well as English-born Lily James who recently appeared in Downton Abbey and Wrath of the Titans as Korrina.
The trio is currently testing with Branagh in London this week. The only star confirmed so far for the project is Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s evil stepmother.
While I would’ve loved to see Watson in the role, she has recently wrapped Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, the comedy This Is The End with Seth Rogen and James Franco, as well as Noah, along with Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly.
Once Branagh fills the glass slippers of the film’s fairer lead, we can expect the role of Cinderella’s handsome prince to be up for grabs. Deadline is reporting that Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden is in the running.
Who would you like to see play Cinderella on the big screen? Would you go see a reinterpretation of the classic story? Do you like the idea of Blanchett as Cinderella’s evil stepmother?
